What Is Karaoke?

Karaoke is a Japanese term for “empty orchestra”. It is a form of entertainment where people get up and sing to songs by following the words on screen. Karaoke songs are produce to sound like the original recordings but without any lead vocals.


Do karaoke songs use original artist recordings?

It is very rare for Karaoke songs to use the original artist. They are mostly create by karaoke manufactures who use professional musicians and singers to produce the likeness of the original song. But the song will be different than the original and from other karaoke manufacture’s song.


Do karaoke songs have background vocals?

Yes karaoke songs have background vocals. If the original song had background vocals, so will the karaoke version. Background vocals can not be removed.


What is CDG, CDGM, VCD, DVD, SCDG, and NEO+G?

These are different kind of karaoke disc formats. All formats require a karaoke player capable of playing these formats. Click here for Glossary of these terms.


Will CDGs play on my standard CD player, DVD player or computer?

CDGs disc will play on any standard cd od dvd player. It will play only audio. Some CDG discs will play on a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, however it depends on the karaoke disc manufacturer.


Will karaoke DVDs play on my standard DVD player or computer DVD-ROM drive?

Yes, your karaoke DVDs will play on standard DVD players or DVD-ROM drives.


What is multiplex?

With a multiplex CDG disc you can separate the vocals and music by using the balance control on your karaoke player. Multiplex discs have about 8 songs on each disc and come with the lead singers voice. Most times these disc will have each song track appearing twice on the disc. Once with lead vocals and once without lead vocals.All discs are either multiplex or non-multiplex format.


How can I remove the vocals from a multiplex disc?

You can use the player’s multiplex button or the balance button. If the karaoke player does not have these buttons, you can play the alternate track without lead vocals.


How do I know what key the song is recorded in?

Normally ,the key is the same as the original song. Most times the key will be shown in the graphics display at the start of the song.


Can I change the key of the song?

Yes, if the karaoke player has a “key control” function. Many karaoke players offer this function, however only a “digital key control changes the key effectively. Non-digital key control changes the key and the speed of the song.


What is an all-in-one karaoke system?

An all-in-one karaoke systems, allows you to play music, view lyrics and sing along. Speaker(s), amplifier and cdg player are come as one unit. Karaoke machines range from small child toys to high end semi-professional units with a TV monitor.


What is a component karaoke player?

They are stand alone karaoke players. They do not have speakers or amplifier. Needs to be connected to a sound system or TV.


Can I record myself singing?

Some karaoke players have recording function through a recordable cassette deck or digital recording. Or, you can connect the karaoke player to a device with recording capability.
