Glossary



Ambiance:

Acoustic attributes of a area with regard to reverberation. A room with a lot of reverb is “live”; a room without is “dead.”


Amplifier (Amp):

Equipment which increases signal level. Many amplifiers are used in audio systems. Amplifiers typically increase voltage or current or both.


Auto Voice Control or Automatic Vocal Cancel:

When a singer is listening to the lead vocal on a multiplex disc and begins singing into the microphone, the lead vocal on the disc stops, when the singer stop singing into the microphone the lead vocal returns. There is no wat to eliminate background vocals.


AV:

Audio/Visual.


Balance:

A control on the Karaoke Machine which can adjust the level of sound coming from the left or right speakers. Can be used to eliminate instrumentals or singer’s voice.


CDG or CG+Graphics:

They are used for karaoke media and are the same size of a normal 5″ CD (standard CD size) with TV graphics or lyrics. Words to the songs appear on a TV screen when the disc is played on a CD+G player and connected to a monitor. Also compatible with standard audio players, however graphics will not be displayed.

Compact Disc Plus Graphics have about 15 songs on each disc and come with the lead singer’s voice removed. Instrumentals and backround singers remain. The idea is to use your own voice as the lead singer.


CDGM or CD+Graphics Multiplex:

These disc have lead vocals that can be removed when they are played. They are used for karaoke media and are the same size of a normal 5″ CD (standard CD size) with TV graphics or lyrics. Words to the songs appear on a TV screen when the disc is played on a CD+G player and connected to a monitor. Also compatible with standard audio players, however graphics will not be displayed.

Compact Disc Plus Graphics Multiplex have about 8 songs on each disc and come with the lead singers voice. Lead voice can be removed via the balance control or Auto Voice Control. Most times these disc will have each song track appearing twice on the disc. Once with lead vocals and once without lead vocals.


Echo:

Digitally adds repeat and delay arrangements to the voice, creating an echo effect for a fuller sound. Most professional singers tend to use the echo function.


Karaoke Download:

Getting karaoke songs or software via the internet. Karaoke song downloads tend to be in the mp3+g file format.


Karaoke Machine:

An all-in-one systems, which allows you to play music, view lyrics and sing along. Speaker(s), amplifier and cdg player are come as one unit. Karaoke machines range from small children’s toys to high end semi-professional units with a TV monitor.


Key Control:

(Also refered to as digital key control, pitch control, key changer) Allows you to raise or lower all the notes to help you sing in your range. Digital key change effects the pitch, not the tempo.


MP3+g files:

2 files – a music file in MP3 format and a graphics file – they are played together to produce the music and on screen lyrics. The name of each file must be the same. Karaoke software is neccessary to play MP3s+g files on your computer. Some Karaoke players can also play MP3s+g files.


NEO:

Also known as: NEOG, NEO CDG, NEO CD+G, NEO CD+Graphics NEO+G is a format developed by RSQ manufacturer. This technology can hold about 75 songs on a single disc. Some karaoke sound track manufacturers have decided to produce NEO+G compatible discs. An RSQ NEO compatible player is required to play an NEO+G disc.


NTSC:

NTSC (National Television Systems Committee) is used in the United States Canada and a few other countries.


PAL:

PAL (phase-alternating line) is being used as the British standard that is used widely throughout the world.


RCA Connector:

Red,White and Yellow cables, used as low-level connectionors between CD players/Tuners/Recievers/Amplifiers.(Red/White – Audio, Yellow – Video)


RF Modulator:

Adapter that converts signal from CDG player thru cable to a non-video ready TV


SCDG or Super CD+G:

Allows manufacturers to burn a CD with thousands of songs on one disc. SCDG disc can only be played on a limited number of Karaoke Machines.


VCD or Video Compact Disc:

Similar to a CDG with video scenes on it. They are a standard 5” sized CDs but in VCD format. VCD format is different from DVDs and CDGs so you require a karaoke player capable of reading VCDs.


Y-Adapter:

A type of connection that splits a signal into two parts. An example would be a connector with one male RCA jack on one end, and two female RCA jacks on the other end. Changes the tempo of the music
